When it comes to moving, most of us don’t think about insurance.
You’ve already got enough on your plate, including your plates; they’re in that box over there. So why would you want to worry about insurance on top of everything else? Well, it turns out that moving is the perfect time to review your insurance policies, and the reason is obvious. In fact, it’s laying all around you.
Moving is the time you go through everything you own – usually as it goes into a box. It is a time to reflect on what you have, what you need, and what you probably should have gotten rid of after college. But as you load your valuables into a flimsy cardboard box, you should probably start asking yourself – is this covered?
Is that painting covered under my homeowners policy?
Use moving as a time to reflect.
Packing all of your belongings and shoving them into a moving truck gives you an unrivaled opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of your life. You actually get an idea of just how many t-shirts you own, how heavy that real wood furniture you convinced your husband the house needed really is, and that you’ve been keeping your good jewelry in an unmarked box under be bed as “protection.”
So are you really protected?
If you’re moving, you have already spoken to your insurance agent about your new house and the policy you have. Even if you’re moving into an apartment, you should have talked with your agent about renter’s insurance and making sure everything you own in the entire world is covered. But packing gives you the chance to rethink the numbers you just went over with your agent – maybe you need more coverage? Or is the modern art painting your friend gave you last Christmas covered on your homeowners policy or does it need it’s own policy? What about your jewels? How much coverage exists for the fancy china you never use – because there is a limit on your homeowners policy.
Take the time to evaluate just how much you have, and how much you have to lose. Then call your agent.
As long as my couch is covered.
A new home is a new start.
Moving into a new place is a chance to do life differently. Not only are you waking up in a different place, you also have a chance to have a new perspective on life, not just a new view from your front window. While you’re reviewing your belongings, think about your vehicles – are they with the same company, giving you a package policy discount? Do you have an umbrella policy to protect you from lawsuits or other liability claims that could exceed the coverage on your new homeowners policy? And if you’re moving to accommodate your growing family, well, I don’t need to tell you to get Life insurance. But I will.
Doing things you’ve been putting off forever and setting up new, good habits is a great way to utilize the opportunity that moving provides.
I think I’m going to take up painting.
